Following are (old) instructions on creating ISR Flyers.
This info could use some updating. As you make your flyers (and posters), it would be really nice if you could help update this page (and the poster page).
Flyers are often, but not always, produced using Illustrator.
Examples can be found here:
Once your flyer is complete, source and print quality PDF should be given to Debi Brodbeck. She will have the PDF added to the Flyer web page and the source placed in the ISR account.

Flyers
NOTE: Flyers are officially posted here
Guide To Making A Flyer (and what to put in it)
- What program to use for making flyers. While you can use any tool to make your flyer, some tools have historically created problems. MS Word for example has been particularly problematic and is not recommended. Adobe Illustrator is the tool often used to make flyers (and that is what the template is in) because it is widely available and relatively inexpensive/easy to use compared to other layout/graphic production programs.
- Achieving a consistent look and feel. The look of the flyers should be consistent with others produced by your peers. Although you can choose to go a different way, there are reasons why the format in the example is the way it is. See below for reasons
- Logos Logo use is often tightly controlled, By using the template, you don’t have to worry about any issues. Some logos like the UC Irvine? logo have placement, color, opacity, and text insertion requirements on it by the UC Irvine administration. (E.g., UC Irvine must be in a specific pantone blue and must be opaque. There must be somewhere in the document a visible text string “University of California, Irvine.”) The official ISR and UCI logos are presented in the template in color schemes consistent with University guidelines. You should be out of trouble if you use it.
- Fonts Some fonts are specific to operating systems. Using these fonts may not work with all printers or platforms. You may get surprising results when printing or viewing your document away from the machine you created in. In the template, generic font types are used. This allows them to be applicable to many systems.
- Specific Acknowledgement, Contact, and other information Most work done by you has been supported in some way by a funding organization. Often this organization requires acknowledgement and the waiving of liability. Also, some software (e.g. old BSD licneses) require advertising the producer of the software. You will need to reserve space for these situations. It is very important that you let readers of your technology know where they can contact you or get specific project information. In the template, much of these tasks has been standardized in one location on the back page.
Flyer Style Guide
- Paper size Plan on flyers being printed on standard 8 1/2″ x 11″ paper both front and back in standard letter configuration
- Margins minimum 1/4″ top, sides, and bottom to ensure proper printer output.
- Front page
- Standard ISR title banner box on top. There should be a 8″ wide, 1 1/8″ yellow box (CMYK values 0 3 20 0 %; RGB 255 247 201) on top of the page containing the ISR logo and the title of your flyer or project. An optional project, organizational partner, or UCI logo may be in the banner box on the right side. (See D below for details.)
- Logo size and placement in title banner box There should be an ISR logo in the banner box. This logo is available in EPS form from either Debi Brodbeck. Please contact them for a copy. The logo used should be placed centered in the left hand region of the banner box. This left hand region is the 1 1/8″ (wide) x 1 1/8″ box formed from the left edge of the colored title banner box. An optional logo is allowed on the right side of the banner box (see D below).
- Title size and location in the title banner box. The title of your flyer should be centered and center aligned in the middle of the ISR title banner box. The font should be Times (serif font) with 1 pt black stroke width and internally colored dark blue (CMYK values 100 65 0 30 %, pantone 288 CVC, websafe RGB 09 28 69). Font size generally varies from a 36 pt to 18 pt. Titles may be of multiple lines. Font size of the other lines do not have to the same size as the first line. They should not be larger fonts than the first line. If a subtitle is used below a main title, it is allowed to be in a solid black Times font of smaller size then the main portion of the title. This subtitle should be centered below the main title.
- Optional logo placement. If there is another organization whose logo should be placed on the flyer, place it centered in the right region (1 1/2″ wide x 1 1/8″ section from the right edge of the banner box).
- Body text The body text of the flyer should be in two-column format with each column of equal width splitting the page. Body text may be of either serif or sans serif font, no smaller than 10 pt in size. Text should be center justified. Hyphenated line breaks are allowed. Titles in the body text should be in bold. Some suggested fonts include:
- serif: Times, Palantino
- sans serif: Myriad, Arial, Helvetica
- Figures, Diagrams, and Pictures Pictures, diagrams, and figures are allowed on the front page and may be placed anywhere you feel is appropriate. They may be labeled by text.
- Back page
- Bottom acknowledgement, contact, and revision date section. The bottom of the second page is reserved for information about who to contact for more information, contact location, project information, acknowledgement of sponsoring organizations, and a revision date. This section begins with a horizontal black line 8″ wide and 1/16″ thick placed 2″ from the bottom of the page. There may be up to three columns of text in this section depending on the information available. The right most column is reserved for sponsoring organization acknowledgement and may or may not have an acknowledgement title over it. Text may be serif or sans serif. In the lower right corner of the page, place a revision date for the document indicating the month and year it was revised (e.g., September 2000).
- Contact information should include the names of the principal investigators for the project, the University address (e.g., Institute for Software Research; University of California Irvine; Irvine, California 92697–3425). A second (middle) column if often used to include direct contact information and/or a project link. This should include the direct contact name, e-mail address, phone number, and fax. This text may looks like:

- Body Text. Body text on the second page should be formatted in two columns and should utilize the same fonts as the front page body text.
- Figures, Diagrams, and Pictures Pictures, diagrams, and figures are allowed on the back page and may be placed anywhere you feel is appropriate. They may be labeled by text.
- Electronic versions Flyers are retained and printed on demand by ISR for the benefit of the authors, ISR, and others. An electronic versions are needed for these purposes. Please submit your source document and a PDF when you are done editing your flyer.
- Printing In order to facilitate the printing process, please arrange to have the new printer receive your print job at the proper settings. (See Debi to get these.) PDF electronic copies often print duller and smaller than source documents printed through the authoring application. Please do not assume that your PDF will automatically look exactly like your source, it will not. For this reason, we ask that you coordinate with Debi in printing from the source. The printer has the capability of saving this file and retaining the proper output setting for latter use. PDFs serve as a valuable backup to situations where applications are lost or are no longer supported. Many applications alter character and images in the printed document. Please check that you flyers print out correctly before submitting the electronic versions of your flyer. N.B. To ensure a professional document, please do not use Microsoft Word to make your flyers. Word does not place images, fonts, or displays colors and objects consistently.
Common Illustrator Problems
- Illustrator version 10 As of December 2003, not all machines use Ill 10, so please save as Ill 9 to allow for portability of the files.
- saving as PDF/ 2 page PDF making a pdf of a 2-pge flyer directly from Illustrator does not work properly. Illustrator defines the pdf as a 1-page (16 x 11) single sided when saving as pdf. The most effective method used by the staff in making a 2-page pdf is first printing the document as a postscript file, then converting that postscript file into pdf using Adobe Disstiller (comes with full Acrobat).
- Color matching to the printer (printer settings) The color settings you see on screen may not macth the output generated by the printer. You’ll need to proof (or calibrate) your documents if exact color matching is important to you.
- Font problems Some fonts just aren’t available on all platforms. Try to use generic, cross-platform types when possible.
